The SBVJF Vocal Jazz Workshop is in full swing!
Our workshop format is designed to teach the art of vocal jazz to individual children, with up to 35 children participating in one workshop. The students receive 8 weeks of instruction in individual and group vocal technique, performance coaching, jazz history and music theory. Four music educators from the SBVJF teach the workshop, providing an approximate 8 to 1 student/teacher ratio. Taught during the course of the regular school day for one hour per week, the workshop includes homework, practice CDs and jazz history lesson plans. The program culminates in a vocal jazz performance for the school student body. The course is free to fifth and sixth grade elementary school students, who are selected by the directives of the participating school’s staff. The SBVJF workshop is a rich and rewarding experience, not only for the participating children, but for parents, teachers and the entire student body during the final performance , which is packed with fun jazz lyrics, jazz history, facts and demos.
Drastic Cutbacks
With music programs in the schools facing drastic cutbacks due to the California budget crisis, this program becomes even more important. The SBVJF is working hard to provide this experience to schoolchildren at no charge. You can make this happen with your donations. What this means to you is that you can make a difference and help teach kids to express themselves with vocal jazz by your donation.
